The horrors of Belgian Congo, in a BBC documentary. King Leopold II of Belgium ruled the Congo as a personal property for decades, in the most ruthless and cruel way imaginable. In fact, I recently learned that the reputation of Belgium suffered greatly from this, the country being regarded as a savage colonizer.
How different from the idea we currently have of this little country! This change of perception about Belgium came in part thanks to Germany, which after invading its smaller neighbour during the start of WWI, transformed Belgium into a victim on the eyes of the World.
